The West Loop Walking Wine Trail
Well I finally did it! After many years of thinking that it might be great to have a wine trail right in the heart of downtown Chicago, I finally created what I think is a special wine trail that allows visitors and Chicago residents a chance to experience Wine Country in an urban setting.
The West Loop of Chicago has become quite a bustling place. Many of the best restaurants are located on Randolph Street and now there are a few wine bars as well. The area has both residential buildings as well as offices. Lots of tech like GOOGLE and McDonald's is moving its corporate headquarters to the space where Oprah used to tape her show! Lots of stuff happening and it all feels quite international there.
Tapping into the demand for an urban wine experience, I have arranged with three of the finest restaurants the feature wine to do tasting flights and shared small plates. The restaurants are The Lunatic, The Lover and The Poet, Formento's, and City Winery. All have something unique to offer my clients and each makes a nice presentation centered around food and wine.
At The Lunatic, The Lover and The Poet, we enjoyed a flight of roses from around the world while sampling several artisanal breads and cheese. The tasting was held in a small private area in the basement of the restaurant that also serves as a wine cellar.
From there we moved to Formento's where we enjoyed a tasting of Italian reds along with fresh antipasto plates that centered around the cuisine of sunny Italy.
We ended the trip at City Winery at west side of the West Loop where we were able to try several wines made in house. The food that was served along with the wine was wonderful and tasty.
Overall, it was a wonderful set of tastings and I am looking forward to taking more people on this Wine Trail in the future!
